Mount Rainier, MD — Rivers & Roads Consulting is proud to announce its sponsorship of The Vision is Yours, a regional conference focused on placemaking and community-driven design. The event, hosted by the Neighborhood Design Center, will take place April 23–24, 2026, in Mount Rainier, Maryland.

This multi-day forum brings together planners, designers, community leaders, and public officials to explore how public spaces can better serve communities.

A Regional Gathering Focused on Placemaking

The Vision is Yours is designed to spark new ideas and strengthen collaboration across sectors. Attendees will participate in keynote sessions, breakout discussions, workshops, and hands-on activities.

The conference creates space for people working in different fields to learn from one another. That kind of collaboration is often missing, yet essential to moving projects forward.

Over 200 participants attended last year’s event. This year’s conference continues to build on that momentum with expanded programming and deeper engagement opportunities.

What is Placemaking?

Placemaking is the process of shaping public spaces so they reflect the people who use them. It focuses on how a place feels, functions, and brings people together. This can include everything from improving streetscapes and parks to activating vacant spaces with events or small businesses. At its core, placemaking is about listening to the community and designing spaces that support everyday life, local identity, and long-term use—not just physical improvements, but places people actually want to be.

Supporting the Work That Moves Communities Forward

Rivers & Roads Consulting supports The Vision is Yours because it reflects the work we do every day with towns and Main Street programs across the region. We work with local leaders who are trying to bring buildings back into use, strengthen their downtowns, and turn good ideas into projects that actually get done. That work rarely fails because of a lack of vision—it stalls when communities don’t have the structure, partners, or momentum to move forward. This conference creates space for practitioners to share what’s working on the ground, compare approaches, and leave with ideas they can apply in their own communities.

Facilitating a Conversation on Rural Development

In addition to sponsoring the event, Rivers & Roads will play an active role in the conference’s Creative Connections Exchange, an interactive networking experience held during the lunch session.

As a Conversation Host, Sam Shoge will facilitate discussions centered on the question:

“What are the unique—or non-negotiable—elements for successful economic development and placemaking projects in rural areas?”

This format is designed to move beyond presentations and into meaningful dialogue. Participants will rotate between tables, engaging in small-group conversations that surface real-world insights and shared challenges.

Each session will focus on practical experience, emerging trends, and lessons learned from the field.

Why These Conversations Matter

Rural communities face a different set of constraints than urban areas. Limited resources, smaller populations, and tighter networks all shape how projects move forward.

At the same time, these communities often have strong local identity and deep relationships. When leveraged correctly, those strengths can drive meaningful, lasting change.

This conversation will focus on what actually works—what can’t be skipped, outsourced, or ignored when trying to move a project from idea to implementation in a rural context.
