Margaret Knudsen is a strategist, communicator, and grant writer who blends sharp operational insight with storytelling that moves funders and stakeholders to action. With more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, public relations, and community development, she helps organizations strengthen their systems, elevate their voice, and secure the resources they need to grow.
Before joining Rivers & Roads Consulting, Margaret served as Executive Director of Cambridge Main Street, where she revitalized the organization’s operations, doubled its budget through grants and donations, and rebuilt relationships with state partners and local businesses. Under her leadership, the organization secured over $200,000 in new funding, restored its standing with state and grant entities, and reintroduced a major event that attracted over 5,000 attendees and generated record sponsorships.
In addition to her leadership experience, Margaret has developed a successful track record as a grant writer and content strategist. She has written and won six-figure awards from the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, among others.
Margaret’s career also includes communications and public relations roles at HealthCorps, Raytheon, and the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, where she led national campaigns, secured high-profile media coverage, and trained leaders to engage effectively with the press. Her combination of grant strategy and communications expertise allows her to craft funding proposals and organizational narratives that not only attract resources but also build trust and long-term credibility.
At Rivers & Roads, Margaret focuses on resource development, strategy & planning, and association & nonprofit management — helping clients refine their message, strengthen their infrastructure, and position themselves for sustained growth.
